Jesus has been nailed to the cross and hangs between two criminals. At the foot of the cross, a mixed company has gathered: praying followers, chatting enemies and calm soldiers.

Rembrandt shows the scene with an almost heavenly light. In his paintings he often played with light and darkness, but in an etching such contrast is rare.
