A painting from Leonardo's period in Milan (1482-1499). Experts are not sure whether Leonardo painted this work entirely by himself. Students may have worked on it as well. This is suggested by some harsh lines, the rather flat landscape and the uncomfortable position of the child.

For centuries the painting was in the possession of the Litta family. In 1865 it was acquired by the Russian czar, who put it in the Hermitage. There the painting was transfered from panel to canvas.
