Madonna of the Rose Bower

tempera on panel (200 × 115 cm) — 1473 Museum Dominican Church, Colmar

Martin Schongauer biography

This painting of Mary with child is considered tp be Martin Schongauer's most important work. It is praised for Mary's beautiful red gown, for her absent-minded gaze, and for the detailed depiction of flowers, trees and birds.

The paint was applied on a golden background. The work used to be larger, approximately 250 x 165 cm. The present, neo-gothic frame was added around 1900, together with the richly decorated wings.
