Cimabue ca. 1240 – 1302

Madonna in Maestà (Trinità)

tempera on panel (385 × 223 cm) — c. 1290 Museum Galleria degli Uffizi, Florence

Cimabue biography

An enthroned Mary has her son on her lap. They are surrounded by angels.

Cimabue made this altarpiece for the main altar in the church of the convent of Santa Trinità in Florence. In 1471 it was moved to a less prominent spot, to make room for a contemporary work.

A comparison to his 1280 Maestà shows how Cimabue's style evolved. There is more depth in this panel: the angels no longer are above each other. Also, the expressions on most faces are more gentle.
