According to the museum, the name of this painting is San Pietro in carcere, Saint Peter in prison. Peter was jailed twice. The first time was in Jerusalem; he was liberated by an angel. The second time was in Rome and ended when he was crucified. The skull which his right hand rests on probably refers to his death. Peter's keys to the gate of heaven are also on the table.

The rough brush stroke is typical for Serodine.
