Paul is shown here without a sword, his usual attribute. He can easily be identified by the text in the upper left corner. He sits on a bench that has the same colour as his robe and the wall.

In his hands he holds a book. Or perhaps it is the notebook he used to write his many letters in.

The painting was made by a young Velázquez.
