The Gallerria Spada in Rome owns an almost identical painting by Borgianni. There the mysterious covered figure and the ointment jar are omitted. Also there is only one nail.

The ointment jar is the trademark attribute of Mary Magdalene, which indicates that she is the covered figure.

The others lamenting the dead Christ are Mary and John the Evangelist.

Earlier, Andrea Mantegna applied the same point of view.
