The high priest Caiaphas wants to have Christ convicted by the council of priests, but he can't find proper witnesses. He then asks the quiet Jesus whether he is the son of God. Jesus answers "Thou hast said" and that they will soon see him sitting next to God. Out of anger over what he considers to be blasphemy, Caiaphas tears his own clothes apart. The council of priests now has to convict Jesus.

To the left Peter again denies knowing Jesus.

This panel used to be on the reverse side of Duccio's large Maestà altarpiece.
