This is the largest and most important part of the Maestà, the influential altarpiece Duccio made for the Siena cathedral. Maestà is Italian for majesty, in this case Mary on a throne with her child on her lap.

Besides Mary and her child the panel shows 20 angels and 19 saints. The four saints kneeling in the foreground are the city's patron saints: Ansanus, Savinus, Crescentius and Victor.
