J. M. W. Turner 1775 – 1851

Shade and Darkness

oil on canvas (79 × 78 cm) — before 1844 Museum Tate Britain, London

This work is linked to Genesis 7:20

Shade and Darkness - the Evening of the Deluge was first shown at an exhibition in 1843, together with Light and Colour - the Morning after the Deluge.

In both square paintings Turner played with the German poet Goethe's theory of colours. It states that the creation of colour depends on the distribution of dark and light reflecting through a transparent object.
