The Roman governor Pilate shows the captured Jesus to the people that wants to crucify him: "Behold the man!" It is hard to see from his expression whether Pilate feels compassion or disgust. The large canvas was commissioned by a rich merchant from Venice, Giovanni d'Anna. |
