In front of his palace the Roman governor Pontius Pilate shows the captured Jesus to the Jewish people. He uses the words Ecce Homo, Behold the Man. Encouraged by their priests the crowd demands the execution of Jesus. In this engraving Lucas van Leyden focused on the crowd. Jesus and Pilate are still in the center but much less prominent. |
