This very large etching shows the well-known episode where Pilate presents Jesus to the Jewish people. In his composition Rembrandt used elements from Lucas van Leyden's large Ecce Homo, such as the palace and the central group in the foreground.

The print was made on valuable Japanese paper. In 2018 one of the rare first states was sold on an auction for £ 2.2 million.

Twenty years before making this etching, Rembrandt made a different version.
