This is one of the portraits of the four evangelists made by the Flemish artist Gortzius Geldorp. John is depicted with one of his common attributes, an eagle.

John has just written the famous first line of his gospel, in Latin. "In principio erat Verbum, et Verbum erat apud Deum, et Deus erat Verbum."
