Christ has just risen from his grave. The signs of the passion are still visible: the crown of thornes and the wounds in hand and chest.

Raphael seems to have been influenced by Leonardo when he made this painting, in Florence.

This genre is sometimes called Pax Vobiscum: peace with you.
