Pontius Pilatus had given permission to Joseph of Arimathea to take down and bury Christ's body. Joseph is the man to the right, in red. To the left is Nicodemus. Mary holds Christ's left arm. According to the Bible, Christ's grave was hewn out of a rock. Titian choose to put the corpse in a sarcophagus decorated with scenes from the Old Testament predicting the Crucifixion and Resurrection. This page previously showed another Entombment by Titian, made around 1520 and now in the Louvre. |
