Rogier van der Weyden biography

This work is linked to Mark 15:46

Christ's body has been taken off the cross and is being put into a grave.

Mary and John hold Jesus' arms. Behind them are the elegantly dressed Joseph of Arimathea and Nicodemus, supporting the body. In the foreground is Mary Magdalene, kneeling with arms open.

The scene is set against a rural background with trees, city towers and lingering roads.

Van der Weyden may have been inspired by a similar panel by Fra Angelico dating from circa 1440. It also has the tomb built in a hill, and the body is also shown almost standing.
