Clever composition by Van Honthorst. The candle serves two purposes: shine light on the table so Joseph can see what he's doing, and shine light on the faces so we can see them.

The role of the angels to the right is not clear. Perhaps they symbolize that Jesus grew up under the guardianship of his heavenly father.
