The Descent of the Holy Spirit

illumination (17 × 12 cm) — 1452-60 Museum Musée Condé, Chantilly

Jean Fouquet biography

This work is linked to Acts 2:2

Mary and the eleven remaining apostles are sitting in unison when all of a sudden a white dove appears. It is the Holy Spirit sending forth his rays to the virgin and the disciples. "And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost".

This is one of the miniatures that Fouquet made for the book of hours of the French treasury keeper Étienne Chevalier. The artist applied fleeing lines to give the image depth.
