Judas kisses Jesus as a way to identify him to the Roman soldiers that want to capture him. This drawing is a study for the large canvas with The Capture of Christ which now is in the Prado in Madrid. Van Dyck here used bistre, a brown pigment with a yellowish cast made from the soot of burned beech trees. |
