From his grave Christ descends into Hell. He meets a number of lost souls who may at last go to Heaven.

This fresco used to be on a wall in Cézanne's father's house near Aix-en-Provence. It was later transferred to canvas.

It is a copy of a 1516 painting by Sebastiano del Piombo, but done in Cézanne's own style.
