Lucas van Leyden biography

This work is linked to Ephesians 4:9

Christ, who died on the cross and was buried in a grave, descends into Limbo in order to save souls. In his left hand he holds a cross with a flag. Behind him are Adam and Eve.

This hand-coloured engraving is one of eighteen in a handwritten prayerbook. One of the other prints shows Jesus before Annas.
