The people of Manasse suffer under the rule of the Midianites. Young Gideon is willing to rise against the enemy, but he has little faith in his own strength and in his troops'.

An angel then appears and tells him that the Lord is on his side. Gideon doesn't believe him and asks for a sign. The angel tells him to put goat meat and unleavened cakes on a rock. With his staff he touches the sacrifice, which is immediately consumed by fire. Now Gideon knew who he was talking to.

Ferdinand Bol also made an etching on this topic.
