Book of Kells

The Book of Kells is a medieval Gospel book, containing the four gospels of the New Testament. The manuscript was written around the year 800, on one of the British isles: Ireland or Great Britain. For many centuries it was kept in the Abbey of Kells; hence its name.

Apart from being very old the Book is known for its precious illuminations. It contains ten full page images and numerous smaller images.

The 340 folia measure 330 by 250 millimeters. The texts are almost complete; only from the Gospel of John a few pages have gone missing. The Book is nowadays kept in Trinity College Library in Dublin.
