The prophet Elijah is sent to the city of Zarephath. God told him he would meet a widow who would care for him. Outside the city walls Elijah indeed finds the woman, who is gathering sticks. She gives him water and offers him shelter in her house. When her son falls ill and dies, Elijah brings him back to life by calling on God.

This small panel is a typical Breenbergh painting: a wide landscape with Roman ruins.
