Peter Paul Rubens 1577 – 1640 Judith with the Head of Holofernesoil on panel (120 × 111 cm) — c. 1616 Herzog Anton Ulrich Museum, Braunschweig This work is linked to Judith 13:9 Judith has just severed the head of the Assyrian warlord Holofernes with a sword. Her maid looks at it with a mixture of awe and horror. Not much later, the head would adorn the walls of Judith's besieged city, Bethulia. Judith has often been used in art as an example of feminine courage but also of seduction. Rate this work of art: |
