Other passers-by had not paid attention to the wounded man, who had been robbed of his possessions. But the Samaritan tries to help him.

Hodler was one of the most important Swiss painters in the 19th century. Here he depicts the well-known episode from a low point of view, thus providing more intimacy to the scene. He made another painting on this subject in 1886.
