Valentin de Boulogne

1591 - 1632

French painter about whom not much is known. His father was also a painter. He had moved to Rome by 1614, where he became a pupil of his compatriot Simon Vouet. Presumably also there he met Nicolas Poussin, whom he became friends with.

His work is deeply influenced by that of the Roman master Caravaggio, both in terms of the use of color and the realistic rendering of the subjects.
