Nicolas Poussin

1593/94 - 1665

portrait of Nicolas Poussin French painter, mostly worked in Rome, major representative of classicism. At first Poussin tried in vain to imitate then popular baroque style but after a sickbed (1629/30) he chose to let himself be inspired by the classics and the works of Raphael and Titian.

Poussin's work is clearly constructed with an almost photographic quality and movements that seem frozen in time. The portrait on this page is a detail from a self-portrait from 1650.
