Large as life the emaciated body is lying in the grave.

In the history of art, the proportions of this painting are exceptional. Holbein probably made it for the Swiss jurist and humanist Bonifacius Amerbach (1495-1562), who wanted an epitaph for his parents in Basel's charterhouse. For reasons unknown it never made it to the monastery.
