This painting was commissioned by a woman whose son had recently been murdered. It depicts a woman, Mary, fainting at the sight of her mutilated and murdered son, Jesus, a stab-wound in his side. In the background to the right, Mount Golgotha.

Raphael enjoyed great success with this painting of intricate composition.
