Il Tintoretto 1518 – 1594

Christ Carried to the Tomb

oil on canvas (164 × 127 cm) — c. 1550 Museum Scottish National Gallery, Edinburgh

Il Tintoretto biography

This work is linked to John 19:38

Lighted by a few women with torches, some men bear Christ's body into the grave. In the foreground two women help the swooning Mary, the mother of Christ.

This canvas was made as an altarpiece for the Dal Basso family chapel in the church of San Francesco della Vigna, in Venice. It used to be larger. At the top right, two feet are visible. An old print tells us that they belonged to an angel hovering above Christ, holding a crown of thorns. At some time the top of the canvas was cut off.
