Luca Signorelli ca. 1450 – 1523

The Flagellation

tempera on panel (84 × 60 cm) — c. 1475 Museum Pinacoteca di Brera, Milan

This work is linked to John 19:1

Jesus had been sentenced to death on the Cross by Pilate. But first he was to be flagellated. Soldiers tied him to a pillar and then scourged him.

Signorelli put the scene against an architectural background. The set-up is symmetrical, with the pillar in the middle.

The panel was commissioned by a fraternity in the city of Fabriano in the Marche region. It was made to be carried in processions.
