"Who, me? Can't you see I'm busy?" Tax collector Matthew looks up while his colleagues continue counting the toll money. Jesus has called him to join his group.

Jesus stands to the right, dressed in a simple gown. He is highlighted by a small halo.

The light falls on Matthew, just as it does in Caravaggio's depiction of the episode. It obviously served as an example for Strozzi's canvas.
