Just like other Jewish boys little Jesus was circumcised a few days after his birth. Mantegna here sets the episode in a temple, where a priest yields the knife.

This panel was probably the right wing of a triptych with the Ascension of Christ to the left and the Adoration of the Magi in the centre.
