Simone Martini ca. 1284 – 1344

Mary asks Jesus what he was thinking

tempera on panel (49 × 35 cm) — 1342 Museum Galleria degli Uffizi, Florence

Simone Martini biography

This work is linked to Luke 2:48

At the age of twelve Jesus spent three days in the temple discussing the scriptures. His parents did not know where he was, and obviously became worried. When they finally found him, Mary asked "Son, why hast thou thus dealt with us?" Jesus replied with "Don't you know that I must be about my Father's business?"

This is a wooden panel with gold leaf. On the frame is written "SYMON DE SENIS ME PINXIT SUB A D M CCC XL II", which means something like "Simone of Siena painted me Anno Domini 1342".
