Soon after Jesus was born, an angel appeared to a group of shepherds, announcing the news. The shepherds immediately set off for Bethlehem: "And they came with haste, and found Mary, and Joseph, and the babe lying in a manger." (Luke 2:16) Upon leaving they spread the news around the country.
For some reason the adoration of the shepherds has not been depicted as often as the adoration of the magi.
