While Jesus is sleeping his followers try to lower the sails in the fierce storm. One of the apostles tries to wake his master. He will succeed, and Jesus will quiet the water and the wind. He then asks his pupils what they were afraid of, don't they have faith?

Between 1840 and 1854 Delacroix made a series of paintings on this subject. He spent much time in the coastal city of Dieppe during that period; perhaps that is where he learnt how to paint waves. Some of the works show boats without sail.
