Andrea Mantegna 1431 – 1506

The Adoration of the Magi

tempera on panel (76 × 76,5 cm) — c. 1461 Museum Galleria degli Uffizi, Florence

Andrea Mantegna biography

This work is linked to Matthew 2:11

The three wise men from the east present their gifts to the newborn child. Behind them is their impressive party, with camels and men wearing turbans. Mary is surrounded by small angels, a Byzantine theme.

This panel is the central one of a triptych now in the Uffizi museum. The three panels were probably commissioned by Ludovico III Gonzaga for his private chapel in Mantu.

The left panel shows the Ascension, and the right panel shows the Circumcision.
