Canterbury stained glass

Canterbury Cathedral is known for its marvelous stained glass windows. Several subjects are depicted, including a series on the ancestors of Christ.

Originally there were 86 windows with ancestors, but only 43 survive. The series started with Adam and ended at the virgin Mary and her child. The window with Adam is the oldest and dates from 1180.

The Bible has two lists of Jesus' ancestors: in Luke 3 and in Matthew 1.
