oil on panel (47 × 35 cm) — 1819 Museum Escuelas Pías de San Antón, Madrid

Francisco Goya biography

This work is linked to Luke 22:43

When Jesus, full of doubt, prays on the Mount of Olives, an angel appears to him and gives him strength. The angel offers him two chalices, symbols of belief and salvation.

Goya made this panel for the 'pious schools' in Madrid, an institution run by an order known as the Piarists.
