With his eyes shut washes his hands. Behind him a woman seems to sum up arguments. It may be his wife, who according to Matthew 27:19 had dreamed badly about "that just man". She advised Pilate to keep clear of him.

In the background the next episodes of Christ's Passion are already shown: to the left is the preparation of the cross, and to the right the Crowning with Thorns.
