According to Mark, the blind Bartimeus was sitting at the Jericho city gates when Jesus passed through. He called out to him a number of times: ‘Have mercy upon me.’ Jesus asks him what he wanted. The faithful Bartimeus wanted to see, and his wish was granted.

A merchant from Lyon by the name of Reynon commissioned Poussin for this painting. Through cardinal Richelieu it became part of the collection of king Louis XIV.
