This is one of several paintings that Titian devoted to Mary Magdelene. It shows her with a passionate devotion. Mary's modest pose is that of the classical beauty Venus.

This painting shows strong resemblance to a 1565 version. One of the main differences is that in this version Mary's breasts are not covered.
