The Samaritan unties the ropes he has used to secure the injured man to his horse. He had found the man lying besides the road. They have arrived at an inn where the man can be helped.

Compared with his previous depictions (1633, 1642) this version is more intimate, mostly because Rembrandt left out most of the inn.
