Ananias (or Aeneas) was a member of the first Christian community in Jerusalem. Together with his wife Saphira he sold a piece of land and pretended to lay the entire proceeds at the feet of the apostles. Peter saw through the scheme at once, and the cheating couple fell dead on the spot as if by miracle.
