Fra Bartolommeo 1472 – 1517

Job

oil on panel (168 × 108 cm) — c. 1516 Museum Galleria dell'Accademia, Florence

This work is linked to Job 13:16

Job holds a scroll with the text "ipse erit salvator meus", which is Latin for "He also shall be my salvation" (Job 13:16).

This panel by Fra Bartolommeo was made for the Billi chapel in the church of Santissima Annunziata in Florence, where it used to hang to the right of the central panel with Salvator Mundi. To the left was a portrait of the prophet Isaiah.

Isaiah is said to have announced the coming of Christ, and Job is said to have announced his resurrection. That explains their positions next to the Saviour of the World.
